Sedera Louise Williams Hines was born in Madison Arkansas on August 13, 1928 to
Clint and Ruthie Williams. Sedera was the third child in a family of five girls (Gussie,
Armenthia and twins Marilyn and Carolyn). She professed her Faith in Christ at an
early age of ten at the Madison Light Baptist Church under the Pastorship of Rev. W.L.
Purifoy, who showed a great love for both children and adults alike. Sedera’s grandmother
Lila and her parents saw to it that she and her siblings were very involved in church
activities. The entire family, mother, father and children sang in the choir. Sedera also
Served in various other capacities which included, Sunday school teacher, choir, BTU,
as well as coaching children for their role in plays and other church programs.
Sedera graduated from Lincoln High School in Forrest City, Arkansas where she and
her sisters attended. She then went on to junior college at Dunbar Junior College in
Little Rock, Arkansas. Upon her graduation, she enrolled in AM&N now the University
of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where she received her Bachelor’s degree became a member of
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree, Sedera and her
sister Armenthia both taught elementary school in Blytheville, Arkansas for a number of years.
Sedera also had the experience of teaching grades 1 through 6 in a one-room School
House for several years. This required a great deal of patience and a lot of planning; both
of which were her forte. This was a common practice in the South since schools were
scarce in some areas. Sedera was also selected to serve as a Principal during her tenure. She
loved children and was committed to doing whatever she could to help foster their education.
Sedera took advantage of an opportunity to relocate to New York City where her
oldest sister Gussie resided. She lived with her sister and family for a short time,
at the delight of her niece Jackie and nephew David until she found her own place.
Sedera enrolled in Fordham University, Bronx, New and worked part-time at
Peck and Peck. Like her sisters, she was a “shop-a-holic” so Peck and Peck was
the ideal place for her to work. After receiving her Master’s Degree in Social
Science, she began her career as a licensed Social Worker at the Department of
Social Services in New York. Her love of people and her desire to see them
become self-sufficient was what made her so good at what she did and the reason
she loved her job. Sedera met her future husband, Eldred who also worked at the
Department of Social Service at an event when he asked her to dance the Twist.
After dating for a year, they got married on the day after Christmas on
December 26, 1964 at Convent Avenue Baptist Church where she was an
active member. Sedera and Eldred resided in the Bronx until they purchased
their home in Goshen, New York. Their love of travel took them to many
different places including several of the Caribbean Islands, Canada, Hawaii,
North Carolina, Martha’s Vineyards, California, Florida, New Orleans, Texas,
Virginia, Mississippi, Georgia and back home to Arkansas for many fun filled
family reunions with her sisters and their families, just to name a few places. Sedera
loved people. She was a “People Pleaser” and she firmly believed that there was good
in everyone, even when others could not see it.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruthie and Clint Williams, sisters Gussie,
Armenthia and Marilyn.
She leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish her memory her beloved Husband and
Caretaker, Eldred Hines, Sister Carolyn Deal, 3 nieces Jacqueline Green, Karen Deal,
