Michael A. Gurda Jr., a lifelong area resident, entered into rest on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, FL. He was 75 years of age.
Son of the late Michael A. and Adele Gurda II, he was born March 7, 1946 in Middletown, NY.
Michael was a longtime attorney with the Gurda Law Firm in Middletown, NY.
He was a graduate of Middletown High School where he was Captain of the Swim and Tennis Teams and won a State Championship in Tennis. Michael then graduated from Villanova University and subsequently received his Juris Doctor degree from St. John’s University School of Law where he was a member of the Law Review. He was admitted to the Bar in 1972. Michael also served in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Until his death, Michael was President of the Orange County Agricultural Society and played a pivotal role in the operations of the annual Orange County Fair and the Orange County Fair Speedway. Michael enjoyed playing tennis, fishing and was an avid golfer, playing many rounds with his friends at the former Orange County Golf Club where he was a member.
With all of his success in life, the things he treasured most was spending time with his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, athletic abilities and confident demeanor.
Survivors include: his children, Michael A. Gurda IV and his wife Kim and their children Megan and Michael of Middletown; Christopher E. Gurda and his wife Jill and their children Christopher, Cynthia and Sinclair of Goshen; Colleen Trigg and her husband Andrew and their children Andrew, Eleanor and Elizabeth of New York, NY; Jackie Gurda and her fiancé Tyler Furrough and their children Saylor and Tyler of Vero Beach, FL; his sister, Elaine Kennedy of Hilton Head, SC and her children Craig and Lauren; and numerous cousins. Michael was predeceased by his parents and his daughter Megan.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 2-4 & 7-9 PM Monday, December 20th at Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, 26 Grove St., Middletown, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 AM Tuesday, December 21 at St. Joseph’s Church, 149 Cottage St., Middletown, NY. Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Newburgh, NY. Following cremation, Michael’s cremains will be buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Middletown, NY.
According to New York State mandate, masks or facial coverings will be required at all times while in the funeral home and the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Michael’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 121 Executive Drive, New Windsor, NY 12553.
