Mark Horler, age 62, passed away from a massive stroke on June 15, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, humor, and a deep love for history, baseball, and his family.
Family was always at the center of Mark’s life. He was a proud and loving father to his daughter, Madeline Horler, who was the light of his life. He supported her dreams, celebrated her successes, and stood by her with quiet strength through life’s ups and downs. He was also a dedicated stepfather to Amanda (Hilyard) Gulbrandsen from a young age, with whom he shared many special moments, deep conversations, and unlimited support that stood the test of time. He was the ultimate brownie dad. Mark also leaves behind Alberto Monges, Madeline’s fiancé; Amanda’s wife, Lauren Guldbrandsen and his granddaughter, Julien Gulbrandsen.
In life Mark was an unwavering Boston Red Sox fan. He followed the team through every season—good, bad, and miraculous. He often said that loving the Red Sox taught him patience and hope, and some of his fondest memories were made at Fenway Park, whether in person or in front of the television with family and friends. Baseball, to him, was more than a game—it was a way of life, a connection to his past, and something to pass on to future generations.
Mark spent his career as a passionate social studies teacher at Twin Towers Middle School. He started teaching in 1985 and retired in 2017. Throughout his 30 plus year teaching career, he inspired countless students with his love for civics, American history, and meaningful conversation and debate. He believed in the power of understanding the past to create a better future and took great pride in the work he did in the classroom.
Born in Middletown, NY on July 17, 1962, Mark developed a love of learning early in life. He graduated from SUNY Cortland with a degree in Secondary Education - Social Studies, and soon found his true calling in the classroom. As a social studies teacher for over 33 years, he believed deeply in the importance of civic engagement, historical awareness, and critical thinking. His classroom was a place where students were encouraged to ask questions, challenge ideas, and see themselves as part of something larger than the present moment.
Students and colleagues alike remember him for his dry wit, encyclopedic memory for historical trivia, and the way he brought lessons to life—often with a well-timed joke or an impromptu story that tied the past to the present. For him, teaching was never just a job—it was a responsibility and a joy.
Though life’s paths shifted, those who knew Mark will remember his wit, his curiosity, and the care he showed to the people around him. His influence lives on in the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the lives he touched.
