Garritt VanderSchaaf Jr., a lifelong area resident, entered into rest on Monday, October 8, 2018 at Highland Rehabilitation in Middletown, NY after an 8 year battle with Alzheimer’s. He was 72 years of age.

    The son of the late Garritt and Ruth VanderSchaaf Sr., he was born on November 6, 1945 in Middletown, NY.

     Gary had been employed as a union electrician with IBEW Local 363 and worked with Harry F. Rotolo Electric in Middletown. Gary proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1965-67. He was a member and former two term Chief of the Circleville Volunteer Fire Company. He was a member of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs and a 10 year volunteer with the Red Cross. Gary enjoyed playing golf and racquetball.

    The family would like to extend a special thank you to great friends, neighbors, firemen and co-workers who took time to visit Gary and to Highland Rehabilitation for their care and kindness.

    Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Jan VanderSchaaf at home in Circleville; his children, Scott R. VanderSchaaf and his wife Nancy of Circleville, Kevin G. VanderSchaaf and his wife Regina of East Quague, NY, Keith J. VanderSchaaf and his wife Aye of Scottsdale, AZ; his 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; his step-mother, June VanderSchaaf of Circleville; his 4 sisters, Barbara Eason and husband Ernie of Mims, FL, Faye Dolson of Circleville, Valerie Harrison and husband Dan of Middletown, and Joann Cucciarre of Souderton, PA; his brother, Jim Winter and his wife Kathy of Deland, FL; numerous nieces & nephews. Gary was predeceased by his parents, and his step-father Robert Hoose.

    Funeral Services will be private.

    Memorial contributions in Gary’s memory may be made to the Alzheimers’s Association, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 103, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601-4060.

    Arrangements have been entrusted to the Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, Middletown, NY.
